Performance Parts Tempest Stages 2000

DOWN TO THE WIRE

After some 50 minutes of rallying in what were moderately damp conditions, it was astonishing that 2 drivers, both members of the same motor club, should finish the Performance Parts Tempest 2000 with the same total – 50:27! Our congratulations to Phil Morgan / Martin Douglas and Guy Anderson / Dave Taylor on an astonishing battle, decided in Phil’s favour by a 5 second margin on SS1.
It was superb to see such a large, quality entry for this year’s Tempest, sending a clear message to the rallying world that whilst we may not be blessed with the longest stages in the UK, we do have some of the best. Try and think of any other events that boasts 2 stages, predominantly gravel and up to 5 miles in length, that are within _ mile of a quarter of a million people!
Warren Heath and Yateley Wood were in superb condition even after the passage of 160 cars and they will continue to be the Jewel in the Tempest Crown. A new format Minley Manor featured an opening 1-mile section that passed over the top of the M3 (Does any other UK rally cross over a motorway competitively?) as well as a previously unrallied 1-mile stretch to the finish through the slippery and testing Minley Woods. Road repairs and the creation of some new tracks in this Royal Engineers Training Area should see Minley return to the favourite stage list in 2001.
The Performance Parts Tempest 2000 was a real success, albeit slightly damp towards its conclusion and we must acknowledge the efforts of the Marshals and Timing Crews who greeted each competitor with a cheery wave and broad smile.

Finally, 2001 is already in the planning and the organisers would welcome any feedback or suggestions. Long Valley, not rallied for over 6 years, could be back in the listing and it is in prime condition – Bagshot also has its possibilities.

Whatever happens, the Performance Parts Tempest 2001 looks likely to be even better!

Many thanks to the Marshals without whom the event would be unable to run.
