What’s it all about?

This was the second running of the event in which individual drivers (no Co-Driver or Passenger) drove over a pre-set course, set out in a similar way to a rally stage.

Arrows and normal stage signs were used to define the course.

The stage is around 3-miles of mixed surface (tarmac, concrete and 40% smooth gravel) with fast and slow bits and even a humped-back bridge and some of yumps to keep drivers on their toes.

Vehicles may be double-driven (same vehicle entered by 2 drivers)

Report

After a thrilling 2-way battle, Peter Elkins took the honours in this years Team Tempest Rallysprint, held at Bramley in Hampshire.

Organised by Sutton and Cheam Motor Club, the second running of this part tarmac part gravel event was a straight fight between Martyn England in his new Mitsubishi Evo 9 RS and Peter Elkins in his immaculate Escort Cosworth.

Despite very slippery conditions, Elkins threw down the gauntlet with an impressive first run time. England rose to the challenge and set out at a blistering pace for his first timed run, however, a huge jump at the infamous bridge carried too much speed down the straight. England’s immaculate Evo impacted on the fence posts at the end of the straight and ruined his time and some of his paintwork.

Meanwhile, Elkins shaved 2 seconds off his first run, England responded with a further second off the time to take the lead with one to go. Not to be beaten, Elkins posted an amazing time on the final run, taking the win from England by just 1 second.

Four crews went off at ‘post 4’ which was an extremely slippery bend causing the event to run slightly behind schedule and some red faces amongst competitors.

The Rallysprint consisted of two practice runs and three timed runs. The organisers put a format together to allow “car sharing” with a number of competitors doing just that with the most successful duo being Ian Roberton and Mark Bullen in a Nissan 240 RS.

10th placed finisher Bruce Coate Bond recovered well after going off on the very first bend of the first practice run!
