Abingdon CAR-nival 2006

10th and 11th June 2006
Rally Report
Pre event favourites Will Nichols and Nick Broom took a second consecutive victory in the 2006 CAR-nival stages. After an immaculate drive and having to cope with the loss of 6th gear, the duo steered their Subaru Impreza WRC to a near 2-minute victory.

Second place went to Lyndon Barton and Jonny Vance in another Impreza WRC. Despite unfamiliarity with the venue and losing a gear-shift paddle mid stage, a determined Barton still managed to take fastest time on the final stage.

In third was the flying ex Francois Delecour Peugeot 306 Maxi of Guy Wigley and Mark Burton who also had their own dramas throughout the day.

Fourth place and first in class E went to another Impreza WRC, that of Paul Kirtley/David Jones who after a cautious start, set some impressive times to ultimately overhaul the 5th placed husband and wife duo of Steve and Yvonne Furzeland in yet another Impreza WRC.

Sixth place and first in class C was taken by the giant killing Corsa RWD driven by father and son team David and Julian Wilkes.
The 10th running of this excellent event saw a full entry of 100 cars, but the hot weather and 11 mile stages took their toll throughout the day. The 51 crews who actually finished knew that they had been in a rally!

Major retirements included Peter Lloyd/Graham Handley’s Impreza WRC, which succumbed with electrical woes on SS1 and previous winner Simon Mauger/Brian Cammick with head gasket failure on their Mitsubishi Evo 4.

In the remainder of the classes:

A victors in an MG ZR were Martin Head/Neil Billingham who came in over 10 minutes ahead of their nearest challengers!

Class B went to Haydn Morgan/Lee Harding in their rapid Nova and class D honours were taken by Stuart Fossey and Sarah Walker in a Mark 2 Escort.

As in previous years, the CAR-nival also helps to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund and local charity, Stowford House. This years event means that a total of £125,000 has now been raised which is a really fantastic achievement. Who says you can’t make money in Motorsport?
